European Portuguese Beginner Level (A1-A2)

Part One (A1)

Overview

The aim of this level is to enable students to manage simple and everyday situations using Portuguese as a foreign language in its European variant.

Objectives

By the end of this level, students will:

1. Recognise Portuguese in written and spoken forms.
2. Write and understand short texts.
3. Gain an understanding of European Portuguese.
4. Acquire basic vocabulary for formal and informal communication.
5. Produce effective and fluent communication using the vocabulary developed in this level.

Syllabus

1. Unidade 1: Personal introductions, nationalities. Definite articles. Verb “Ser”. Personal pronouns.
2. Unidade 2: Alphabet. Verb “Ter”. Numbers.
3. Unidade 3: Articles. Prepositions. Contractions.
4. Unidade 4: Interaction phrases. Vocabulary.
5. Unidade 5: Personal pronouns. Describing people. Nouns and adjectives, agreement. Colours.
6. Unidade 6: Social expressions. Reflexive pronoun conjugation.
7. Unidade 7: Definite and indefinite articles. Contractions. Demonstrative pronouns. Verb usage. Text comprehension.
8. Unidade 8: Verbs in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd conjugations in the simple present indicative. Verbs “Ser”, “Estar”, and “Ter”.
9. Unidade 9: Verbs with special endings. Derived verbs. Reflexive verbs.
10. Unidade 10: Gerunds. Possessive pronouns.

Part Two (A2)

Overview

This level aims to enable students to manage everyday and work-related contexts using Portuguese as a foreign language in its European variant.

Objectives

By the end of this level, students will:

1. Write and understand emails and short texts.
2. Further develop an understanding of European Portuguese.
3. Produce assertive oral communication.
4. Achieve effective and fluent communication using the vocabulary developed in this level.

Syllabus

1. Unidade 1: Course introduction. Phonetics: LH, NH, CH sounds. Nasality. Letters Ç, X, L, Z, T, D.
2. Unidade 2: Regular and irregular verbs in the simple present indicative. Daily routine and time.
3. Unidade 3: Possessive pronouns. Phone conversations. Dialogues. Social and family life.
4. Unidade 4: Demonstrative, interrogative, and indefinite pronouns. Food. Shopping.
5. Unidade 5: Expressions and use of the simple future indicative. Sports and leisure activities.
6. Unidade 6: Regular and irregular verbs in the perfect past indicative. Forms of address. Health and hygiene. Services.
7. Unidade 7: Regular and irregular verbs in the imperfect past indicative. Travel and transportation. Holidays and environment.
8. Unidade 8: Punctuation. Localisation.
9. Unidade 9: Text comprehension and production. Work contexts. Social media, technology, internet.
