European Portuguese Beginner Level (A1-A2)
Part One (A1)
Overview
The aim of this level is to enable students to manage simple and everyday situations using Portuguese as a foreign language in its European variant.
Objectives
By the end of this level, students will:
- Recognise Portuguese in written and spoken forms.
- Write and understand short texts.
- Gain an understanding of European Portuguese.
- Acquire basic vocabulary for formal and informal communication.
- Produce effective and fluent communication using the vocabulary developed in this level.
Syllabus
- Unidade 1: Personal introductions, nationalities. Definite articles. Verb “Ser”. Personal pronouns.
- Unidade 2: Alphabet. Verb “Ter”. Numbers.
- Unidade 3: Articles. Prepositions. Contractions.
- Unidade 4: Interaction phrases. Vocabulary.
- Unidade 5: Personal pronouns. Describing people. Nouns and adjectives, agreement. Colours.
- Unidade 6: Social expressions. Reflexive pronoun conjugation.
- Unidade 7: Definite and indefinite articles. Contractions. Demonstrative pronouns. Verb usage. Text comprehension.
- Unidade 8: Verbs in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd conjugations in the simple present indicative. Verbs “Ser”, “Estar”, and “Ter”.
- Unidade 9: Verbs with special endings. Derived verbs. Reflexive verbs.
- Unidade 10: Gerunds. Possessive pronouns.
Part Two (A2)
Overview
This level aims to enable students to manage everyday and work-related contexts using Portuguese as a foreign language in its European variant.
Objectives
By the end of this level, students will:
- Write and understand emails and short texts.
- Further develop an understanding of European Portuguese.
- Produce assertive oral communication.
- Achieve effective and fluent communication using the vocabulary developed in this level.
Syllabus
- Unidade 1: Course introduction. Phonetics: LH, NH, CH sounds. Nasality. Letters Ç, X, L, Z, T, D.
- Unidade 2: Regular and irregular verbs in the simple present indicative. Daily routine and time.
- Unidade 3: Possessive pronouns. Phone conversations. Dialogues. Social and family life.
- Unidade 4: Demonstrative, interrogative, and indefinite pronouns. Food. Shopping.
- Unidade 5: Expressions and use of the simple future indicative. Sports and leisure activities.
- Unidade 6: Regular and irregular verbs in the perfect past indicative. Forms of address. Health and hygiene. Services.
- Unidade 7: Regular and irregular verbs in the imperfect past indicative. Travel and transportation. Holidays and environment.
- Unidade 8: Punctuation. Localisation.
- Unidade 9: Text comprehension and production. Work contexts. Social media, technology, internet.

Teaching-Learning methodology
